Practising watercolour

So I have been trying out all new crafts over the past year, one being calligraphy and the other drawing/painting with water colour.

I know I suck…. When I first did these butterflies I thought they looked really good now I think wow what crap. But it’s all a learning curve, and I don’t have an art background so teaching myself to paint is quite difficult and frustrating.

I will say though, I have spent many hours getting lost in doing washes and trying to find the right balance with water and paint. I think i am getting better… So I tried one last thing last night.

I drew a geometric bird which I saw online and wanted to create a blended wash but I actually only wanted it to splash outside the lines – but I made a mistake and then ended up making the background the main focal point.

As Bob Ross would say, happy little accidents. I think i did okay with the background, it blended nicer than some of my other practices.

Hoping to get more done this weekend and lettering. I am saving up to get some decent paint, brushes and watercolour paper. The stuff I have is OK but not very good quality so makes learning not as fun as I think stuff would turn out better with quality paper.

That’s all for now xo

Hey! I'm a 27 year old blogger, crafter, writer, cat lover and what ever else. I currently live with my boyfriend and cat in Stoke on Trent UK. I am currently writing a sci-fi novel and my passion for writing grows more more each day. I hope to be a published author and not sit on my work for years to come. I also spend a lot of time trying new crafts rather than perfecting just a few, but i love to get stuck in and try new things! You will find all sorts of hobbies on my blog, including snippets of writing!

  1. Oh these are cute. You’ve done better with your first attempts in watercolours than I did! I love the colours in the butterfly, and I love the idea of the geometric bird on a background… A cool combination of styles. I think we always look at our own work more critically than others do, but you’re seeing improvements, and keeping on experimenting, and that’s what’s important

    1. It’s really tricky with watercolour it’s the ratio I need to get down but paper towels come in handy if too much water LOL the butterfly was not meant to be so dark and thick of colour I visioned something then it ended up being that haha. Geometric art is so cool!!!!! It’s really relaxing to look at idk why?

      1. That’s cool though… Sometimes things look good even if they’re not what we initially imagine they’d look like! I’d not really come across geometric art before, but I’ve been watching the greenhouse academy, and their logos are geometric birds!
