Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.
And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.
One terrible morning, Jude and her sisters see their parents murdered in front of them. The terrifying assassin abducts all three girls to the world of Faerie, where Jude is installed in the royal court but mocked and tormented by the Faerie royalty for being mortal.
As Jude grows older, she realises that she will need to take part in the dangerous deceptions of the fey to ever truly belong.
But the stairway to power is fraught with shadows and betrayal. And looming over all is the infuriating, arrogant and charismatic Prince Cardan …
Disclaimer or something: Can i just say? This book has raving reviews, so i don’t disregard anyone’s taste or that that think this is a five star book – Everyone is different, but i am struggling to find the five star worth.
To me a five star book is something like Tolkien, J.K Rowling, Emily Bronte etc.
This is my opinion and i respect those of others.
Don’t be put off by the 3.5 rating. This would of been a solid 4 for me, but i had a few issues with the main character, Jude.
I’ll start by saying that this was a good read, i actually enjoyed the book as it’s been a long time since i have read anything with Fae folk. Of course this meant my expectations were going be high but mainly because this book was overly hyped – It was so hyped i bought it because i was seeing it everywhere and needed to read it for peace of mind, something try not to do is read books ASAP ’cause they are hyped up.
The story itself was interesting, but only because of the other characters. Jude for me was boring, whiny and unworthy of being a main character. She is one of three sisters and mortal. Vivi is the only sister that is fae, and i found her more interesting than Jude – She had powers, i would of loved to of seen her tackle this story in this world than boring Jude.
I also didn’t connect with Jude nor any of them really, she again was annoying, boring and whiny. She doesn’t have much going for her other than she wants to fit in and be one of the fae, cliche.
Oh, yes lets quickly touch on the hyped up tournament in the story – Jude and Cardan, i was looking forward to it but it fell flat and was something i kind of skipped over. I was expecting a real battle but it felt more like kindgergarten’s playing with light sabers.
Now as for the other characters, Prince Cardan the horrible little sod he is – HE was very intriguing to read, especially when you found out about his brother beating him. The most interesting bits of the book for me were the royal family, i wanted to know more, i wanted to be the eyes and ears like the spies. Their was a lot of introducing to other royalty that i felt compelled to read more about but they were merely mentioned because they were kind of extras in a scene.
As for the world Jude lives in, what world? Where was the world building. Apart from the way they spoke, not much was really detailed about where they lived. Which is why if it was Vivi as the MC, this probably would of also given us better insight to the world as well and the way they lived.
But no, boring mortal Jude.
Apart from it falling flat a little bit after the half way point, towards the end was where i felt compelled to keep going because that’s when it going interesting, it’s taken me a month to read this because i forgot about it – That being said, i had to keep going because i was hoping it got interesting. That’s the type of story i wanted or expected. I did find a lot of it was filler, pointless talk from Jude – Boring, mortal Jude.
*For a first book in this series, i expected more introduction into the world, kingdom, characters but i cant really say anything else bad.*
I did like some aspects of this book, i loved the bad guys, i was intrigued about the world (but that lacked) it’s a good story and it does have its interesting aspects. I can’t really say much more.
I am wondering if it does deserve that 4.. But the things i didn’t like are too over shadowing.
For my first experience reading a book by Holly Black, i am satisfied. She is a great writer and i no doubt her next book will be a success and i wish her the best!
Next book… My next read is Keeper by Kim Chance, so keep a look out!
